How Much Does A Wedding DJ Cost in Denver?

HOW MUCH DOES A WEDDING DJ COST IN DENVER?

You’ve either just started, or are knee deep in planning your DREAM wedding in Denver and are hit with another big question, “how much does a wedding DJ cost?”

The truth is, you’re not just booking someone to play music. You’re investing in the vibe, flow, and energy of your entire celebration. Unlike ordering a pizza, you can’t just send it back if it’s bad (is there such a thing as bad pizza though 🍕). While often overlooked, your wedding entertainment is the most critical factor that dictates whether your guests remember a beautiful celebration, or a boring night. Think about it.

What do you want your guests saying as they walk out of your wedding, and how much influence does your DJ have when it comes to that?

…usually more influence than any other vendor.

You probably searched Google or your favorite chat bot and it spit out a range from $800 to over $6000+. Why such a huge gap? The simple answer, because you’re paying for their value which is made up of 4 things:

  1. Their ability to perform
  2. Their experience
  3. Their commitment
  4. …and their equipment.

So, let’s chat about those real quick then get into how it all adds up.

IS YOUR DENVER WEDDING DJ A HEADLINER OR BACKGROUND MUSIC?

The biggest dividing factor between wedding DJs is their ability to perform. Imagine seeing your favorite artist in concert at Red Rocks. You don’t attend for the lighting rigs, special effects, and speakers, you primarily go for the artist. The best performers bring an electric energy, know how to engage with their audience (whether on the mic or through the music), and create an experience that leaves you wanting more!

The same holds true for a premium wedding DJ. A talented DJ is a headliner who knows how to put on an immersive show and move people both physically on the dance floor and emotionally through the night.

They are experts in crowd dynamics knowing precisely what to play, when to play it, and how to control the energy of the evening and crowd to ensure the perfect celebratory flow from ceremony to the last song.

You’re not investing in equipment. You’re investing in their talent. Anyone can buy a chef’s knife but only an experienced chef can deliver a five-star meal.

EXPERIENCE  IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DJ & ENTERTAINMENT PARTNER.

The high level of performance mentioned above is rarely accidental and typically the result of deep knowledge. The best performers have honed their craft over hundreds of weddings in diverse venues all over Denver. They have been tested, refined, and proven to deliver perfection under pressure. This experience is what allows a talented DJ to not just play music, but to partner with you to make your wedding vision a reality.

Here’s how experience plays a role in your wedding:

  1. Taking your vision to new heights. An experienced pro goes beyond simply taking orders. They take your initial vision and act as your creative partner to help make it even better. They are not just checking off boxes, they are suggesting that perfect song that fits your vibe, or offering creative ideas that take a special moment from good to out of this world.
  2. Reading the room. Skilled musicians can look at their crowd and determine what will get them moving. There are no shortcuts when it comes to this. This comes from years of trial and error, consistently testing music that gets the crowd moving.
  3. Avoiding disaster. Experience also comes in handy when things don’t go as planned. A seasoned professional prepares for the unexpected. They know how to gracefully handle sudden weather changes, equipment failure, timeline delays, and other logistical snags without you or your guests ever noticing a beat was missed.

HOW COMMITTED  IS YOUR DENVER WEDDING DJ TO YOU?

The barrier to entry for becoming a wedding DJ in Denver is pretty low. Their commitment to you is not only a tell-tale sign of their experience, but how passionate they are for what they do. Dedicated professionals are always searching for new ways to improve their craft and lead the pack.

Those that are committed to their clients generally:

  1. Invest in their clients. There are a lot of tools out there to help you plan your entertainment. Some DJs will send you a .pdf planning sheet to print and fill out, others have easy-to-use apps with videos to guide you through the entire process. Some will take your form and do what it says, others will spend time getting to know you and your vision to ensure your wedding day looks, feels, and sounds like you.
  2. Invest in themselves. MCing is a lost art amongst wedding DJs and one of the most important skills for them to have. Just like any other profession, there are tons of resources, workshops, and training to improve their craft. Yet, most treat it as a hobby and don’t pursue it. The true pros always seek to improve themselves for the sake of their clients.

LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DJS EQUIPMENT.

I know, I know. I said equipment isn’t what you are really paying for… to some extent. However, it does play a role in overall cost due to a number of factors.

  • The experienced DJ owns the right tools for the job. They’ve done it so often they know what works, what doesn’t, and how to get the best sound out of their equipment.
  • The headliner DJ focuses on the performance and will often have additional lighting and effects available to take the experience to the next level.
  • The committed DJ replaces their equipment every few years and invests in backup equipment to ensure the show goes on without issue.

The ideal DJ? Well, they would be the one that meet all three of those qualities. Right?

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND ON YOUR WEDDING DJ IN DENVER.

This question can only be answered by what’s important to you, but since you asked, here’s a guide that will help you make the right decision. You can really break up pricing into 3 tiers:

$800 – $1500 | The Budget Wedding DJ. This is typically a newer DJ or hobbyist that is just getting into the market. They generally have limited experience which means:

  • They likely don’t know how to perform, but rather run a Spotify playlist or similar. No live mixing. No engagement.
  • They are order takers and usually unable to expand on your vision, don’t know how to read a room, and god forbid if something goes wrong.
  • They simply don’t have the time to commit to creating helpful tools or getting to know your vision. Typically, this is a hobby for them that competes with a full-time job.
  • They don’t bring in enough revenue to make sense of keeping equipment up-to-date, let alone having backup options.
$1500 – $3000 | The Average Wedding DJ. Typically, a DJ with more know how and experience that has been in the market a few years. Perfect for couples looking for an ‘average’ wedding experience.
  • Usually know how to beatmatch music, somewhat comfortable MCing and engaging with an audience.
  • Some offer the ability to help expand on ideas, offer suggestions, read a room, and stay calm when chaos erupts.
  • Have invested some time into creating a more seamless planning experience for you, which in turn helps them deliver average results.
  • Those on the upper end typically have equipment thats within 5 years old and backups if needed.
$3000+ | The Professional Wedding DJ. These are usually full-time pros that rock weddings every weekend. Does that matter? Would you trust a hobbyist surgeon, or one that works on their craft every day?
  • Performs at a high level, procures and tests out the best music, produces their own edits, and uses remixes, mashups, and a number of other skills to dial in to specific crowds and keep the dance floor rocking.
  • Experts at reading the room and adjusting the energy level on the fly to ensure every person that wants to dance, is dancing. Ability to connect with guests and get them hyped up with a mic, or music. Will take your ideas and turn them into a work of art.
  • Have top tier planning tools, wedding planning tutorials, inspiration on their social media accounts, and a process that makes planning your entertainment seamless and fun.
  • Replace their equipment every few years and always carry backup equipment with them… just in case.

SO HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND ON A WEDDING DJ IN DENVER?

If having a completely unique, fun, and seamless experience is important to you, expect to pay around $3000 or more for a wedding DJ in Denver.

It’s not just a wedding, it’s a once in a lifetime milestone where you get the opportunity to show your loved ones the best night of their life.

Your DJ has the sole responsibility of ensuring everyone leaves your wedding raving about it for years to come.

Justin & Lesley Kada started Exclusive Events after getting married in 2018 and dealing with the same struggles couples face today. It was hard to find reputable vendors that were upfront with their pricing, cared more about our vision than making a sale, had great communication, weren’t “cookie cutter”, and were easy to vibe with. When we started, we promised to make a difference in our little corner of the market!
